D&D 5e: Dwarf Artificer Guide

Artificers are naturally curious and inventive. They are designers, inventors, and architects of magical items. Specialists in infusing items with magic for supporting their team in and out of combat.

When you choose to roleplay as a Dwarf, you combine the advantage of your racial traits and class. Your Dwarven Resilience and Tool Proficiency make you a force to be reckoned with.

How to Make a Dwarf Artificer

Because it’s set in fantasy, players who love guns won’t always get to play with such weapons. Well, the good news is that the Artificer class is here to give you that chance. The Gunsmith subclass will make you an engineering expert in-game.

If you don’t want to be an engineer, follow the Alchemist path. This subclass is more like a scientist. You can create alchemical fire, smoke sticks, and more.

You have the freedom to choose between the hill and mountain Dwarf subraces. Choose the hill Dwarf subrace if you want a sturdy and wiser character. If you’re after more strength and proficiency in armor, pick the latter.

When you roll your stats, place the highest roll under Intelligence. It is the Artificer’s primary source of spellcasting abilities and skills. Next, follow it up with Constitution or Dexterity, depending on your play style. Constitution will increase your health and help with spell concentration, while Dexterity will improve your AC, making you harder to hit.

The best background for an Artificer class is the guild artisan as it naturally fits a class that is centered around crafting. However, feel free to choose other backgrounds that will help you optimize your abilities and skills.

How to Play a Dwarf Artificer

Among all the classes, the Artificer class is the newest addition. Think of Artificers as the D&D equivalent of a Wizard crossed with an engineer. In combat, this means you can use your Alchemist’s Satchel to dole out surprise attacks.

If you’re a Gunsmith, you can use your magic-infused firearm to shoot a blast of thunder, a wave of energy, and more. As you level up, you gain more knowledge and engineering skills to improve your weapons and magic.

How to Roleplay as a Dwarf Artificer

Your creativity is the limit of your power as an Artificer. Your access to spells and specialized weapons make you a powerful ally. Whether you’re in battle or out on the road, you have much potential in your hands.

Artificers are curious, inventive, and resourceful by nature. They’re also very driven, often by the rivals that they seek to outdo. Speak with your DM about your character’s rival. Use this as a tool to shape the character.

For example, Kinnelen appreciates all things created from fire and metal. Yet, there’s one thing she enjoys more than the touch of smooth metal—that is to outshine her sister, Hilleken.

Hilleken is an absolute genius. Kinnelen has to work four times harder to even come close to her sister’s work. Yet, Kinnelen’s day is always brighter when she shows off her new best invention and sees the look on Hilleken’s face.
