Starting Stats

Since wizards rely on their casting, the main ability you’ll want to focus on is your Intelligence. It helps determine spell potency with saving throws and how many spells you can prepare. What other abilities to enhance depend on what you wish to do. Dexterity is your best option for defense since you won’t be proficient with any armor. Constitution will make concentrating on your spells easier if you get hit and more Health for longevity.

Subclass Options

The thing that Aarakocra have in their arsenal that most don’t is a Fly speed. It can be used to great advantage depending on what kind of spells you use. There are several good schools of magic to get into. Two great schools that could utilize the safety of the sky without hindering yourself from being too far away could be Conjuration and Order of Scribes.

Conjuration

A way to counter the lack of physical combat your character might have as a full caster is to summon an ally. Doing so can allow you to have a physical powerhouse while launching other spells that don’t require concentration from above. It will also become easy to maintain concentration with Focused Conjuration. It’ll also increase your already impressive mobility with Benign Transportation.

Order of Scribes

A great benefit this school of magic gives is it makes full use of a character’s mobility and keeps them out of danger. It also extends your field of view with Manifest Mind. The utility of the multitude of angles and the range this provides to be able to cast offensive and defensive spells, use ranged weapons or even just being able to see the whole battlefield. This combination given to an Aarakocra can easily make you an invaluable member of the party.

How to Roleplay as an Aarakocra

There are no real limits to how to play a wizard. You could be a traveling scholar, seeking out new things and magic to explore. There’s also a good chance to be a lookout for your party. Your speed could make it so that you can be a bit of a coward who needs to work on your courage. They could just as easily be a protector watching over everyone from above to cast protective spells when needed.
