When did What Remains of Edit Finch Come Out?
Developed by Giant Sparrow, What Remains of Edith Finch is described by them as “a collection of short stories about a cursed family”. The game was released in 2017 for PC, Playstation and Xbox One and more recently in 2019 for Nintendo Switch. It has won the British Academy Games Award for Best Game in 2017 and The Game Awards for Best Narrative in that same year, as well as the Game Developers Choice Awards for the same category: Best Narrative.
What Is What Remains of Edith Finch About?
You play as a Finch family member coming back home in Orcas Island after 7 years. Walking through the woods, the reason is revealed to you: you’re coming because the Finch family believed itself cursed. The Finches have all died before their time in mysterious ways and as you discover the house, you meet each family member as you play through the day of their death.
What Remains of Edith Finch is one of the most beautiful games I’ve played, both in setting and concept. A mix between interactive fiction and a point & click, you’re immersed in a sea of stories to try and understand how you fit into the biggest story: how a curse that may or may not be true has affected every single member of your family so much that it has already become part of it. Each character’s personality is reflected in the narrative form, from the frustrated child actress to the boy who only cared about painting.
I’ve got to be honest: this game has made me cry every time I’ve played it. The way every character grapples with the weight of the family history and seeing how that drives their actions is pretty powerful stuff, you feel for Edie, the strongest and most stubborn Finch, or Dawn, the Finch who wanted to find answers in science. It’s a reflection on how stories and myths can weigh so much on us we end up making them come true.
Is What Remains of Edith Finch Worth It?
With a beautiful soundtrack composed by Jeff Russo (who’s also composed for TV series Fargo and Star Trek: Discovery), What Remains of Edith Finch breaks through the boundaries of what you think a videogame can do. If there is a video game version of a page-turner, this is what it looks like and careful, if you’re like me, you’ll be playing through the last part with a knot in your throat.
